The Wolf
In 1998 I was part of a Highland Festival multi-arts production, Running with Wolves, which was shown in Kingussie Village Hall. Featuring a dancer, a fiddler, a painter and a light artist we created a theatrical piece using some of my sculptures including four scrap metal wolves. It was this show which sparked the idea and led to the very long process of creating a wolf for the village of Kingussie.
I have been impressed by the commitment of Shirley Neild and others who have kept the idea alive and worked hard to make this installation possible.
To make the wolf, as with most of my sculptures it was necessary to observe the animals, their stance and their expression. I visited the Highland Wildlife Park, watched films and documentaries and studied still images in books and online. With an understanding of wolf anatomy along with the essential process of drawing and the intimate knowledge of my immense scrap pile, I set about creating the Kingussie Wolf.
It has been a great pleasure to make this wolf for the people of Kingussie.
